Boating Electronics

Next to your engine your electronics will be the most vital and useful pieces of boating equipment that you will ever need to purchase. Once you have a hull and a means of propulsion the majority of important gear that you need for safety and enjoyment all comes under the heading of boating electronics, and in this category on the Just Chandlers website you will find a tremendous number of suppliers of boating electronics helping you outfit everything from small river going vessels to larger ocean going cruisers. Always carefully consider your electrical systems and requirements when purchasing boating electronics, after all nothing could be more embarrassing than finding that your shiny new motor launch will not work properly with everything turned on at once!

Obviously the most important piece of the puzzle to consider is your engine and charging system when considering boating electronics. You must be able to output a suitable amount of power to operate your systems without placing an undue strain on alternator and batteries, otherwise after some time of continuous use you may find yourself adrift with a flat battery and a lot of dead electrical equipment! Many boat owners use solar panels and other ecologically sound high technology solutions to ensuring that their batteries are always kept fully charged when operating boating electronics, however as a rule of thumb you should never install enough so that it will drain the your batteries quicker than your engine can recharge them.

Whilst boating electronics also encompasses navigation equipment remember that modern GPS and radar guidance systems should not be completely relied upon and you should always have a sensible, manual backup system that requires no electrical power. In fact many boat owners supplement their primary GPS system with a battery powered portable unit that they can keep in their pocket for emergencies, and should the worst arise and then that fail as well then you can resort to using manual navigation methods such as maps and compasses or using sextants and other navigation aids.

Remember lighting! Boat lighting is vital and most be properly and securely wired into your boating electronics to ensure that everything works together cohesively. Without lights you cannot see at night and no-one can see you, many authorities specify red and green side lights and white fore and aft lights as a minimum and many boat owners supplement these with other high intensity spot lights when required. Leaving port without lighting and its associated boating electronics is dangerous and should never be attempted!

If you are planning to spend a long time away from port then you must consider a variety of other boating electronics options. You will require interior lighting and will have to take into account the use of heating and cooking equipment as well as a variety of other factors. Is your electrical system up to the task of running all of this boating electronics? Whatever you decide be sure that it is properly installed and tested and certified as safe, fire is the boat owners worst nightmare and shorting electrical connections can prove to be very hazardous indeed.
